The NHS : Choose and Book & Patient Choice
http://www.chooseandbook.nhs.uk/staff/overview/patient-choice The NHS Constitution, published in 2009, established a new right to choice and to information to support that choice. Choose and Book provides the perfect tool to ensure that referrers have up to date and relevant information to enable patients to access their right to choice.
From April 2008, all patients registered with an English GP were given the right to choose from any NHS funded provider following a referral to a hospital consultant. The only exceptions being cases requiring speed of access, such as suspected cancer and chest pains, in addition to maternity and mental health services.
In April 2009 that right to choice was written into the NHS Constitution. Patients have a legal right to choose where (from any NHS funded provider in England) and when (from published dates and times) they wish to be seen when referred for a first outpatient appointment in a consultant led service.
Choose and Book lists the services of all providers in England with up-to-date information about conditions treated, exceptions and waiting times to enable referrers to assist their patients in making an informed choice.
