TPA’s Medical Advisers
DR. BARRY DURRANT-PEATFIELD (UK) MB BS LRCP MRCS
He qualified at Guys Hospital in 1960 and worked for two years in the Croydon Hospitals before entering general practice. Increasing disenchantment with the NHS decided him to enter private practice where he at once felt drawn to the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid problems. Much impressed by the work of Dr Broda Barnes in the USA, he visited the Barnes Foundation and returned to the UK determined to improve the lot of patients with thyroid illness.
His emphasis on the use of clinical diagnosis, both of thyroid and adrenal problems, and a holistic approach using non-synthetic treatment, enjoyed a great deal of success but brought him into conflict with establishment medicine. He finally decided to retire from active medical practice to study nutrition, write and lecture. He wrote The Great Thyroid Scandal and How to Survive it (now revised as Your Thyroid and How to Keep it Healthy) for the general reader: to give people a deeper understanding of both thyroid and adrenal illness and enable them to play a knowledgeable part in the management of their treatment.
Dr Durrant-Peatfield now lectures and holds nutritional clinics specialising in metabolic health throughout the UK. He is Patron and a medical adviser of Thyroid Patient Advocacy-UK.
DR MALCOLM MACLEAN MD (UAE)
A Scot and graduate of Cambridge University and Westminster Hospital Medical School, developed an interest in Thyroid disorders, having himself been diagnosed as being hypothyroid in his 50s.
Mainly practicing in the fields of general practice and child health, Dr Maclean undertook epidemiological and biochemical laboratory research into the causes of birth defects, focussing on the possible role of a thiol enzyme (COMT) as a factor in these disorders. He has a continuing interest in the possible role of thiol enzyme defects in the development of disease.
As a Scot, he is particularly interested in the view that Scots, as a Celtic race, are particularly at risk to hypothyroidism. That view, proposes that races which historically were forever on the brink of starvation, developed an Off switch of their thyroid system which is on a Hair trigger. Viewed in evolutionary terms, families which did not develop that hair trigger (In order to precipitate a conservation mode at a time of starvation) tended not survive.
He has been ostracised by the GMC for (Inter alia) diagnosing thyroid cases with normal labs (As have so many other doctors).
He now perceives that a new dawn in medicine is approaching, which will based on a clearer understanding, acceptance and response to the causes of disease, thanks largely to the Internet.

DR GINA HONEYMAN (US) – FUNDEMENTAL PHYSIOLOGY LLC
Nearly nine years old, scared and bored, wandering in a small-town hospital hallway while my Mother was admitted for her radical mastectomoy, the lab tec. Noticed me and offered to let me peek into his microscope. A new universe of life opened to me and my interest in science was captured. I wanted to find ways to help my Mother and hoped to avoid the cascade of health problems that followed her cancer surgery. As our family walked through the Recolging Door of Doctors offices and hospitals to search for help for her, we found more frustrations than solutions to problems. My attention focoused on the idea of health. What is health.
Naturally, I chose a career in health care. My experiences as a registered respiratory therapist in the adult intensive care units, ER, and neonatal intensive care unit and the transport team were an invaluable education. The approach to care was surprisingly holistic and this background continues to enhance my diagnostic and treatment skills. However, while crisis management was essential, there were other aspects of healing that became more interesting to me. I knew that health encompassed much more than avoiding death so my focus shifted to teaching people about health. I chose Parker College of Chiropractic for its philosophy of healing as well as education in health and wellness.
Upon graduation from chiropractic college in 1995 I opened my private practice in Tulsa, OK. My practice emphasized gentle chiropractic adjusting and myofascial therapy. My research activities began that year with participation in a multiple sclerosis study using an integrative approach to treatment. Chiropractic adjusting, nutritional supplements, meditation, and visual imagery were used with significant success for many of the participants.
I became intrigued with Dr. John Lowe’s hypothesis that inadequate thyroid hormone regulation of the tissues was the culprit behind fibromyalgia symptoms. In 1996 I incorporated his research-based protocol into my practice. While effective for many patients, some did not respond as expected to the protocol. They needed some different diagnostics and therapies, so I quickly added functional medicine testing and treatment protocols. By addressing suboptimal adrenal gland function, hypoglycemia, and sex hormone imbalances my patients success rates increased to 85%. The research-based protocol evolved into what I termed metabolic rehabilitation. I gradually phased general chiropractic care and myofascial therapy out of my practice to focus exclusively on metabolic rehabilitation.
During the course of our marriage (1997-2006) Dr. Lowe and I combined our talents in research projects, co-authored several articles, and contributed to books by other authors. We co-authored a book titled “Your Guide to Metabolic Health. (Publication List) While he and I no longer share a professional relationship, I still own the Center for Metabolic Health, LLC and formed a new business entity called Fundamental Physiology, LLC. Im excited as I further my research in topics related to poor thyroid regulation, particularly in neuroendocrine disruption.

His latest study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine focused on the effects of a unique 5-carbon sugar called D-ribose for Fibromyalgia patients. The research found that 2/3 of the patients studied showed improvement after only 12 days of therapy. The average increase in energy was 45 percent, with an average 30 percent improvement in well-being.
